A Pious Woman: Hazrat Hamnah Bint Jahsh (RA)

Hazrat Hamnah Bint Jahsh (R.A) was the sister of Hazrat Zainab (R.A) and she was married to Hazrat Musab Ibn Umair (R.A), with whom she entered in to the fold of Islam. She was honoured by migrating to Madinah, and when the women of Ansar and Muhajireen took the oath of allegiance at the blessed hands of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.), she was amongst them.

It has been stated in ‘Munad Ibn Hambal’ and ‘Ibn Saad’ etc. regarding most women: “she was amongst the disciples” This statement refers to the oath of allegiance.

From the battle she prominently participated in the battle of Uhad. She would provide water to the needy, and treat the wounded and injured. Other women also carried out such services, from whom Hazrat Raffeda (R.A) and Hazrat Ummay Kabsah (R.A) have been mentioned.

Hazrat Hamnah (R.A) husband Hazrat Musab (R.A) was also martyred in this incident. It has been narrated that when Holy Prophet S.A.W returned from the battle of Uhad the women began to ask of the fates of their men folk. They were given no news until they approached the Holy Prophet S.A.W.  Accordingly, Hazrat Hamnah (R.A) approached the Holy prophet S.A.W.  The Holy Prophet S.A.W said “O Humnah! Seek reward upon your Abdullah.” She replied, “To Allah we belong and to him we shall return. May Allah’s mercy be upon him and may Allah Forgive him” Then the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “Seek reward upon your uncle, Hazrat Hamzah” Again she replied as before. He then said, “O Hamnah! Seek reward upon your husband, Hazrat Musab Ibn Umair.”  Upon this she cried out “O’ battle!” The Holy prophet S.A.W replied, “The women’s bond with a man is greater than that of a mans with a women,”

Further in the narration the Holy Prophet S.A.W. said, “Why is it that you replied differently upon the news of Hazrat Musab’s (R.A) martyrdom?”
She Imparted, “Prophet of Allah! The acknowledgement of my orphaned children induced such an answer.”

Hazrat Humnah (R.A) then entered in to matrimony with Hazrat Talha (R.A) who was amongst the Asharay Mubasharah. (The ten people who were promised paradise in the world)

The year of Hazrat Humnah (R.A) death is unknown, however, it is known that she was alive until Hazrat Zainab (R.A) death. Hazrat Zainab (R.A) passed away in the year 20A.H. Hazrat Humnah (R.A) had two children from Hazrat Talha (R.A): Muhammad and Imran. Muhammad was known by the appellation of Sajjad.
